About the Town
Hearty welcome to historical town Navalgund which is known for its secular outlook and peaceful co-existence. The name of Navalgund is supposed to have come from abundantly found peacocks (Navilu) which have danced here freely once upon a time. It is well known for the regime of great donor Late Shri Lingaraj Sirdesai of Shirasangi-Navalgund Saunsthan.
The town is blessed by Holymen like Shri Ajat Nagaling Swamiji, Shri Siddeshwar Shivacharya Mahaswamiji of Panchagraha Hiremath, Shri Basavaling Mahaswamiji of Gavimath, Pooja Guru Shri Hurakadli Ajja, Muslim Saint Hazarat Malanga Shavali and many more divine personalities.
Panchagraha Hiremath, a good old Veerashiva Religious Centre, which is renowned for its unique wooden carvings and the ancient Ganesh Temple built by famous Sculptor Jakkanacharya are worth seeing. The town has acquired its fame for world famous traditional hand woven colourful carpets called ‘Navalgund Jamakhan’. The weaving technique of which is only taught to daughters-in-law and not to daughters.
